Waverly Cemetery, Sydney

In silence, lies the dead. Afar you can hear the whispers of waves crashing against the cliffs, yet the stillness of Waverly Cemetery is intimidating.

Opened in 1877, the cemetery contains graves of many prominent people who had shaped the history of Australia. I chanced upon it during my coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee Beach. A beautiful boardwalk takes you to the cemetery, which is located at the top of cliffs at Bronte, an eastern suburb in Sydney.

The grandeur of the place and the spread across the cliffs is very impressing.

Waverly cemetery is one of the most scenic burial grounds in the world. If you remember, there's a scene in the Bollywood movie Dil Chahta Hai, where Aamir Khan walks down this path. I absolutely adore this view of still statues overlooking the massive blue sea.

I was both intrigued and impressed by the statues of angels on the graves. It was the first time I had seen these many statues in a cemetery. I felt each statue had it's own story to tell, they all had a forlorn look.
The place remains open from 7 am till dusk. If you like coastal walks, you can take a bus to Bondi Beach from Central and walk towards Bronte Beach.
No entry fees.

  3. I think those statues add a truly majestic touch to it... yes, they look forlorn I know but they also add a sense that the ones buried here are protected by the angels.. a bit comforting, don't you think so? :)
